The Greater Churchville Riga Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate the Newman Riga Library for being our June 2025 Member of the Month! Lynn Brown and her crew makes this village library an asset to the whole community while being so kind and helpful. Please visit her and say hello and check out all the wonderful things this library has to offer!
Located in the center of the village, the Newman Riga Library has a long history in the Village of Churchville and Town of Riga. Since 1813, there have been many libraries in Riga which were in private homes, harness shops, and stores. It was run by the village residents, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and the Good Templars to name a few of the organizations.
In September of 1921, the library was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents and called the Riga Free library. In 1952, the library building, located on the southwest corner of Main Street and Buffalo Street, was constructed. This was due to the efforts of Floyd Newman, a philanthropist and native of the village.
In 1989, Mr. Newman, along with other area residents raised funds to add a major wing to the library effectively doubling its square footage. The library’s name was changed to the Newman Riga Library in 1992.
Today, the Newman Riga Library is an Association library and a member of the Monroe County Library System. Not only do we have books, large print books, e-books, books on CD, and DVDs to borrow, we offer many services including printing, copying, scanning and faxing. Our annual summer reading program starts June 30th! Please see our website: https://newmanrigalibrary.org for hours and more programming.
We are extremely proud to serve this community and honored to be the Business of the Month.
